In the midst of everything going on in the world with Covid-19, Civil Rights, Division, Climate Change and an upcoming election; where is the decency in America? It can’t be found int the Oval Office. As the Covid-19 Virus has taken over 200k lives the president has been focused on the stock market. He has boast about how great a job he has done and has never mentioned any of the names of those who have succumbed to the virus. Nothing about their families or the people they touched during their lives her on earth.
The president has proclaimed that he gives himself an A on how he handled the Covid-19 crisis. He was heard on tape saying there was nothing more he could have done. Any great decent leader given the atrocious number of lives that have been lost would at least ponder the thought of what more could have been done. A decent person would be troubled by the loss of so many lives and not rally in satisfaction as the death toll continues rise.
This president has project to those who interview him that he is really in the mind set of heard immunity inclining to let in let the virus run its course. It is estimated that in order to achieve heard immunity in our country 2.5 million people would perish. Of course, the unthinkable number of a minimum of 2.5 million lives being lost doesn’t prick the heart of a man without decency.
You may recall that Donald Trump at the height of the pandemic Donald began a charge to open the country back up immediately. The urgency to open the country up came at the moment it was discovered that a majority of those who were dying as a result of the virus were minorities, Black and Hispanic. The minorities affected by covid-19 are just collateral damage due to the fact a majority of them do not support the president.
Even after the loss of one of the most beloved Supreme Court Justices RBG, decency does not prevail. Her dying wish was that her replacement be chosen after a new president is elected, the current president slapped a lie on it saying he didn’t believe she make the request.
Decency in the last four years has escaped the republican party to the point that is no recognizable. In 2016 with eight months until the presidential election the republicans led senate refused to allow President Obama to appoint a Supreme Court judge, claiming it was to close to the next election and the people should have the voice in the selection of the judge. Fast forward to 2020 with a little over a month before the presidential election and following the death of RBG, they are now in the process of seating a new judge. Their bolstering words of the people should have a voice are just vague echoes of the past trampling any sense of the decency that was a mainstay of our country’s senate in the past.
Decency today appears to only be a word you can look up in the dictionary. It is absent from our current leadership and if this leadership is allowed to remain in control for another four years decency will become a forgotten personal quality of the past.
We need to hold one another accountable for our words and our actions. Without accountability decency cannot thrive. Without decency, democracy as we know it will cease to exist.
